Summary[]
Mari takes her leave and climbs into a taxi, wondering what she should do. She deduces that it must be one of those days for her mother. Before the taxi sets off, Seki climbs onboard as well, as he wants to share the ride to save on the train fare. Mari finds his answer somewhat dubious and pushes for a better reason, but Seki brushes it off.
As the car sets off, Seki asks Mari who was on the other end of her call. Mari explains it was her mother, whom she has told earlier that she will be home late as she was hanging out with friends. Mari's mother seemingly said "okay" in acknowledgement, but she either did not approve of it or has since changed her mind, which leads to Seki noting that she seem rather unstable. Mari states that she believe that she is just like any other mother, who simply loves and is overprotective of their child but wants something in return.
Arriving at her home, Mari tells Seki to keep his distance as she does not want her mother to see him. As she is about to go inside, Seki offers to be her ally. Mari appreciates his gesture but begins to blush when Seki expands on his offer. Unfortunately, she is filled with dread as she hears her mother's calling out to her. Mari quickly bids her farewell to Seki and heads inside.
Once inside, Mari's mother starts asking Mari about Seki and whether they have just gone on a date. Mari denies it at first, but her mother immediately accuses her of lying. Her mother then starts raising her voice, stating boys like Seki are just playing, and their objective is to fool around with as many women as possible. Mari tries to argue otherwise, but her mother refuses to listen. In Mari's mind, she knows how mentally weak her mother is, especially when it comes to the topic of men. Ever since her mother's affair, which led to divorce and her father's subsequent suicide, she believes that all men will inevitably cheat on their partners and reasons that everyone is like that as well.
As her mother continues to plead, Mari concludes that her mother starts pushing absurd ideas whenever she feels guilty, but there is only one mother. Therefore, she chooses her mother over anyone else, including Seki. Mari then begins to clam her mother, knowing the fact that if presented with the chance to freely make the choice, she would definitely abandon her mother.
